Mohnkekse – Poppy Seed Cookies

Poppy seeds are another ingredient that I started to use only when I moved to Germany. My favourite dessert with them is the Mohnkuchen (the poppy seed cake), but I still have to test some recipes before I can write it on the blog. Today I show you how to make these very easy and quick cookies with poppy seeds: it takes just few minutes to prepare them and 15 minutes to bake them!

Mohnkekse – Poppy seed cookies

You will need:

60 g poppy seeds
145 g margarine
75 g sugar
170 g flour
20 g cornstarch
5 g baking powder

First, rinse the poppy seeds with cold water. If you don’t have a thin enough sieve, you can use a normal sieve and place a clean cloth between the sieve and the poppy seed.

Transfer the margarine and the sugar in a bowl and stir until the margarine softens. Add the flour, cornstarch and baking powder, then the poppy seed. Mix until you get a smooth dough. If necessary, add some drops of cold water (it shouldn’t be necessary, as the rinsed poppy seeds bring some water with them in the dough).

Let the dough rest in the fridge for 10 minutes. Meanwhile, pre-heat the oven at 180°C.

With your hands, make little dough balls and press them on the baking plate to form the cookies.

Bake for 15 minutes at 180°C (the edges of the cookies should get a bit golden-brownish).
